Bringing Surgical Care and Vision Screening to Bayankhongor

Laurel Surgical Foundation (LSF) recently extended its reach to Bayankhongor Province, delivering much-needed surgical care and comprehensive vision screening to communities with limited access to specialized medical services. For many patients, this was the first time they had seen an eye specialist, and for some, the surgeries they received meant the difference between blindness and a return to independence. By combining treatment with early detection, LSF ensured that both urgent needs and preventable conditions were addressed on the spot.

A Continued Commitment to Mongolia’s Eye Health

This mission to Bayankhongor is part of LSF’s long-standing commitment to providing sustainable eye care across Mongolia. Our work goes beyond one-time interventions. Each mission is a step toward building a healthcare system where quality surgical care and eye health services are accessible to all, regardless of income or geography. The return to rural provinces like Bayankhongor underscores LSF’s dedication to reaching patients where the need is greatest, reducing the burden of preventable blindness, and improving quality of life for entire communities.

Investing in the Next Generation of Surgeons

Alongside patient care, LSF continues to strengthen the ophthalmology residency training program in Mongolia. During the Bayankhongor mission, residents trained under the guidance of LSF’s experienced surgeons, gaining hands-on experience in diagnosis, surgical techniques, and post-operative care. This approach ensures that local ophthalmologists are equipped with the skills and confidence to carry forward the work long after the mission team departs. By empowering residents, LSF multiplies its impact; transforming each trained doctor into a lifelong provider of sight-saving care for Mongolian communities.
