First Public Retinal Imaging System in Mongolia Opens Doors to Affordable Eye Care at the Third Central Hospital

First Public Fluorescein Angiography in Mongolia: A Milestone in Eye Care

Laurel Surgical Foundation, in collaboration with the Deseret Foundation, has proudly supported the introduction of the first public Fluorescein Angiography (FA) service in Mongolia; a breakthrough that is transforming how eye diseases are diagnosed and treated across the country. Installed at the Third Central Hospital of Mongolia, this cutting-edge imaging technology is now accessible to the public for the first time, removing a critical barrier for patients who previously had no affordable access to this essential diagnostic tool.

What Fluorescein Angiography Means for Patients

Fluorescein Angiography is a specialized imaging technique that uses a fluorescent dye to capture detailed images of the retina’s blood vessels. This allows ophthalmologists to detect and monitor serious conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion with unmatched precision. Early and accurate diagnosis means timely treatment, helping to prevent irreversible vision loss for countless Mongolians.

Until now, FA technology was only available in private clinics, often at prohibitive costs. By bringing the first public FA system into a national hospital, LSF and its partners have ensured that patients from all walks of life can benefit from world-class diagnostic care, regardless of their financial situation.

Impact Beyond Diagnosis

The availability of FA is not just a step forward for patient care, it is also a game-changer for ophthalmology residency training in Mongolia. Residents now have the opportunity to learn how to interpret FA results, develop diagnostic accuracy, and design effective treatment plans based on advanced imaging. This ensures that the next generation of Mongolian ophthalmologists will be well-equipped to combat vision-threatening diseases with confidence and expertise.

This milestone is a powerful reminder of LSF’s mission: to provide direct patient care with long-term medical education, creating sustainable, lasting change in healthcare access for Mongolia.
